This month at St Mary’s Parish Church, Woodbridge, Geoff Land (77) was publicly thanked for his remarkable service of 39 years as Senior Sidesperson at the church.
Geoff, a cockney by birth, worked for much of his life as a salesman – selling vacuum cleaners for Hoover. He first came to Suffolk in 1953, and settled in Woodbridge in 1965. He hopes that by now, he might be considered a bit of a local ! He first attended St Mary’s one Christmas Day – but quickly found himself drawn into the regular congregation, and equally swiftly, he became a sidesman. During his 39 years as Senior Sidesperson Geoff has witnessed many changes, including five changes of Rector.
The present Rector, the Revd Canon Kevan McCormack (fondly known by the younger element in the Parish as ‘Kev-the-Rev’) paid tribute to Geoff’s long service. And, to mark Geoff’s retirement from his rôle, he presented him with “a little something to have with your Sunday lunch.” A ‘something’ which clinked satisfactorily, and was most happily received! Enjoy your retirement Geoff !
