|Bishop Nigel & Revd Canon Penny Brown|
How about this for a claim to fame for St Mary’s Church, Woodbridge? We already have a Canon in the Parish Church of St. Mary’s – the Rector is Revd. Canon Kevan S. McCormack. On Sunday, 25th November, in the same church, Revd. Canon Penny J. Brown was licensed as Assistant Priest by the Bishop of Ipswich and St. Edmundsbury, The Right Revd. Nigel Stock.
In his address, the Bishop referred to the difficult week he had experienced at the Synod where the issue of women bishops was debated. And the significance of his first duty back on home ground, the licensing of a female priest. He pointed out the valuable and gifted contribution made by ordained women in the church and expressed his delight in sharing the joy of Penny’s official arrival at St. Mary’s.
Penny and her husband, Peter, were greeted afterwards at a shared lunch in the Church Centre, where she thanked the congregation for the very warm welcome they had received. Having taken charge of the parish already during the Rector’s holiday, Penny has proved herself to be a most welcome and able member of the team. We look forward to her ministry and wish her and Peter many happy years here among us.
